Reminder: Connecticut Personal Income Tax Returns (Forms CT-1040 and CT-1040NR/PY) and Payments Due May 17th

5/11/2021

(Hartford, CT) – The Connecticut Department of Revenue Services (DRS) is reminding taxpayers that the deadline to file Connecticut personal income tax returns and make payments for the 2020 tax year is Monday, May 17th, 2021.

"While many taxpayers have already filed their 2020 income tax returns, the professionals at DRS will continue to offer the highest-quality customer service up to, and through, the May 17th extended deadline," said Revenue Services Commissioner Mark D. Boughton. "Those who file and pay the full amount of tax due on or before May 17th, 2021, will not be subject to any penalties or interest for not paying their state income taxes by the due date. As always, we strongly encourage electronic filing, and urge taxpayers to call DRS with their tax questions – we are here to help."

For those yet to file their Connecticut returns and make payments due May 17th, Commissioner Boughton offered the following reminders:

  • Taxpayers are encouraged to file their 2020 income tax returns electronically. Filing electronically is the fastest way to receive your refund, and is safe and secure.
  • To further assist taxpayers, DRS is offering extended business hours for phone coverage until 6:00 p.m. on Monday, May 17th.
  • Taxpayers who are experiencing financial difficulties in paying the amount due are encouraged to contact DRS. We will work with taxpayers to assist them in understanding their tax liabilities and in making payment arrangements.
  • Taxpayers who need additional time to file beyond the May 17th deadline can request an extension of time to file until October 15, 2021, by filing Form CT-1040EXT, Application for Extension of Time to File Connecticut Income Tax Return for Individuals by May 17th. Visit portal.ct.gov/drs to electronically file Form CT-1040EXT.

To speak directly with a DRS representative, call DRS at 860-297-5962 (from anywhere); 800-382-9463 (within CT, outside Greater Hartford area only); or 860-297-4911 (Hearing Impaired, TDD/TT users only). Visit the DRS website at portal.ct.gov/drs for additional information.

Taxpayers can also receive personal tax assistance from the comfort of their own home via video conference with a DRS representative on the MS Teams platform. Call 860-297-5770 to schedule an appointment.
