What impact will SLF have?

Read time: 6 minutes

Spotted lanternfly (SLF) is mostly a nuisance, but it can still cause problems for plants and daily life across the State. While SLF does not bite people. Both young and adult insects feed on plant sap, which can weaken plants over time.

As they feed, SLF leaves behind a sticky substance called honeydew. This can:

  • Cover plants and lead to black mold that blocks sunlight
  • Make outdoor areas slippery and harder to use
  • Attract bees and wasps

In some cases, infestations can also affect crops and businesses. Other regions may reject plants or products if they think SLF is present.
