Redwing Pond 2009

Redwing Pond, Ansonia

            Redwing Pond is a 1-acre private pond located at the Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center. It has no boat launch ramp and is used to for education and leisure. Our July 2009 survey found the pond to be almost entirely covered by filamentous algae. It had a total of seven plant species with only pond water-starwort (Callitriche stagnalis) being invasive. This species was found in the north corner of the pond near the dam. It was the first time CAES IAPP has found this plant. Snailseed pondweed (Potamogeton bicupulatus)and coontail (Ceratophyllum demersum) inhabited the shoreline areas. In the southwestern end, coontail and small pondweed (Potamogeton pusillus) were common. Sparse populations of southern naiad (Najas guadalupensis) and great water starwort (Callitriche heterophylla) were found. An unidentified species of water starwort (Callitriche) was found along the northeastern shoreline.
