Gov. Malloy Directs Flags to Half-Staff Monday in Recognition of Peace Officers Memorial Day
Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that he is directing U.S. and state flags in Connecticut to be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Monday, May 15, 2017, in recognition of Peace Officers Memorial Day, a national observance that pays tribute to local, state, and federal law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty. It is recognized annually during National Police Week. Accordingly, since no flag should fly higher than the U.S. flag, all other flags, including state, municipal, corporate, or otherwise, should also be lowered during this same duration of time.

Gov. Malloy Urges Greater Public Awareness of State’s Safe Haven Law
Governor Dannel P. Malloy and Department of Children and Families Commissioner (DCF) Joette Katz are urging for greater public awareness of the state’s Safe Haven law, which designates hospital emergency rooms as a location where newborn babies can be safely relinquished, no questions asked. The law protects parents from being prosecuted for abandonment and ensures the infant will be safe and receive adequate care. The state officials said that the abandonment of a baby in downtown Danbury this week reflects the need to grow greater public awareness of this law in order to prevent tragedy.

Gov. Malloy Announces Opening of Jobs Training Center for Female Offenders at York Correctional Institution That is Designed to Further Reduce Recidivism
Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that as part of his Second Chance Society initiatives, the Connecticut Department of Correction (DOC) has opened an American Job Center at York Correctional Institution in Niantic – the state’s only institution for female offenders. The job development program is only the second of its kind in Connecticut and aims to continue reducing the state’s historically low crime rate by providing inmates who are nearing the end of their sentences with the tools needed to become productive members of society upon their release.

Gov. Malloy’s Prepared Remarks from Today’s News Conference Regarding Aetna’s Headquarters
Governor Dannel P. Malloy delivered the following prepared remarks during a news conference this afternoon at the State Capitol. In addition, he released three letters that were delivered to Aetna CEO Mark Bertolini, including two from the Governor – one delivered in March and the other May 15 – and one from Department of Economic and Community Development Commissioner Catherine Smith also delivered May 15.

Gov. Malloy Hails House Passage of Legislation Furthering the State’s Efforts to Combat the Opioid Crisis
Governor Dannel P. Malloy is applauding the bipartisan, unanimous vote in the Connecticut House of Representatives this afternoon to approve legislation he introduced earlier this year and developed in cooperation with a number of lawmakers that was designed to further the state’s efforts to combat the opioid crisis. The legislation, which next moves to the State Senate for their consideration, builds upon a series of reforms that Governor Malloy has signed into law on the topic since taking office in 2011.

Gov. Malloy Directs Flags Lowered to Half-Staff Monday in Observation of Memorial Day
Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that he is directing U.S. and Connecticut flags to fly at half-staff on Monday, May 29, 2017 from sunrise until noon in observation of Memorial Day. As is customary for the holiday, flags are lowered throughout the morning and then raised to full-staff at noon. Accordingly, since no flag should fly higher than the U.S. flag, all other flags, including state, municipal, corporate, or otherwise, should also be lowered during this same duration of time.
